MEPSA was formed in 1999 when two Societies: the Australia and New Zealand Environmental Mutagen Society (ANZEMS); and the Australasian Society for Experimental Pathology (ASEP) amalgamated.
At a special General Meeting of the society in 2009, MEPSA changed its name from the Mutagenesis and Experimental Pathology Society of Australasia to the Molecular and Experimental Pathology Society of Australasia.

Life membership is granted to those members who have been involved with either MEPSA or its parent societies (ANZEMS or ASEP) and is awarded in recognition for their outstanding contributions to both the society and the profession. Recipients of this award are listed below:
